Since the introduction of the first drugs for erectile dysfunction (ED), there has been much debate about the role of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, including Sildenafil and Viagra, in treating ED. Sildenafil, a PDE5 inhibitor, has been shown to have a significant effect in improving erectile function by inhibiting the effects of nitric oxide. On the other hand, Viagra, a PDE5 inhibitor, has no effect on the erectile function of the male. The current consensus of the literature is that both Sildenafil and Viagra have the same effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of Sildenafil and Viagra on the erectile function of men. We examined the effects of Sildenafil on the ability to achieve erections and the duration of erections. Finally, we evaluated the results of the study in which we analyzed the relationship between the effects of Sildenafil and Viagra on the erectile function of men.
A randomized, double-blind, two-way cross-over design study. The protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of National Institute of Drug Evaluation and Control.
Men in the intervention group were randomly assigned to receive either Sildenafil (n=42) or placebo (n=42) for 4 weeks. The Sildenafil (Sildenafil + placebo) group had a mean age of 56.4±9.4 years. Participants received oral doses of Sildenafil (0.5, 1, or 2 mg/day) and placebo (0.5, 1, or 2 mg/day) for 4 weeks, and then were followed up for 4 weeks. The placebo group was given oral doses of placebo (0.5 or 1 mg/day) for 4 weeks. Participants received Sildenafil (0.5, 1, or 2 mg/day) and placebo (0.5 or 1 mg/day) for 4 weeks.
There was no difference in the mean age of the patients in the Sildenafil group (56.4±9.4) vs. the placebo group (57.4±9.4), but there was a significant difference between the two groups (p=0.002). The majority of participants in the Sildenafil + placebo group were allergic to Viagra (75.1%) or to other PDE5 inhibitors (50.9%), and the majority of the participants in the Sildenafil group were allergic to Sildenafil (50.9%).
The results of the patients' erectile function showed that the men in the Sildenafil group showed an increase in the duration of erections (p=0.001). The average duration of erections was 4.2±1.4 days for the Sildenafil group and 3.2±1.5 days for the placebo group.
A significant relationship between the effects of Sildenafil and Viagra was observed for the duration of erections (p=0.022). There was no difference in the mean duration of erections between the groups (p=0.822), but there was a significant difference between the groups for the duration of erections (p=0.002).
A higher percentage of patients in the Sildenafil group (56.5%) were allergic to Sildenafil. The majority of patients in the Sildenafil group were allergic to Viagra (69.3%) or to other PDE5 inhibitors (50.9%).
Sildenafil and Viagra have similar effects on erectile function and, in this study, Sildenafil was more effective than Viagra in improving the ability to achieve erections.
